"2BA56100" or similar named generic files

Hi Friends,

"2BA56100" or similar named generic files (type=file), are
being created with size equal to that of an existing Excel
spreadsheet in the same directory. They seem to be
created when a user saves the existing file.

Tools/Options/Save/Save AutoRecover info every: x minutes
has been unchecked and Disable AutoRecover has been
checked.

File/Save As/Tools/General Options/Always create backup
has been unchecked.

These files are a nuisance and are cluttering up my
directories. How do I stop them!!?

Please advise!

Thanks alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These are all network drives yes? (95%)

They are the orphaned remains of excel files that are created
when an excel file is opened it always happens you have no
choice.
you never usually see them unless the running file becomes
disconnected from the saved version... this is usually the result
of
1 network disconnect
2 network latency
3 a virus scanner locking the file for access for to great a
period

(you users would get "file not saved" error messages)

Check network traffic ... check disk I/O on the server... check
CPU and Mem usage on the server... if any of these are
consistently high do what you can to lower them...

I think you have a different problem. In my experience, these files only get
created when you're saving the original.

When you save a file, excel will save it as a temporary file (8 characters, no
extension). Then if that save is successful, excel will delete the original and
rename this funny named file to the original's name.

You see the results when something interferes with this process.

A couple of things that get pointed at are antivirus software and network
problems (hardware or permissions).

Maybe you could disable the antivirus software (temporarily) to see if that
helped.

If the problem goes away, then visit your local AV site and see if they have
updates. If it doesn't, I'd think I'd try to get my IT department more
involved.

You may want to do a little testing. Open one of those files (use file|open if
you want).

Then determine which file was the original version (the file with the nice
name). Open that one up and see if your last change was in it--or if it only is
in the funny named file.

My bet is that you want the funny named file (since it has the latest info) and
want to dump the "real" file. (They're not just clutter!)

But be careful when you clean them up--you don't want to throw away lots of
work.
