I'm getting a compaq laptop 2190US which has intel celeron 2.4 ghz with 256MB
DDR SDRAM memory(expandable to over 1 gigs) so will it run Windows XP ok??? My
old laptop which I have sold was running windows xp with 512 mb of memory on
800 mhz. I'm just wondering how fast or slow it will run. I don't have money to
upgrade to 512 right now.

You have to ensure your previous RAM is compatible
with the new RAM. And that it's compatible with

It should run well on 256 but, of course, the more the merrier! Really, 256
is adequate for most applications. Upgrade when you see fit.

Merry Christmas,
JAX

Thanks Jax, one more question, it does have ATI RADEON 64mb video card that
shares it is not stand alone. Will this STILL be adequate for running windows
xp and applications? Since I was previously had 512 I'm a bit nervous about
lower ram.
Nothing I can do about it of course until I upgrade but curious

Hi Candy,

I just re-read your OP, I take it from the name you are a she. Please
forgive the she/he in my response to the other poster.

Your video card has it's own 64 Mb's of RAM so, unless you are using some
high demand graphics program or games, there should be little or no demand
on the machine's RAM.

You should be satisfied with your new PC. Use it for awhile and see if you
really need to upgrade anything before you go out and buy it.

The best,
JAX

Thank you Jax! I'm wondering if you may know this, I'll post this in a
standalone thread if you don't answer.

The laptop that I sold has windows xp UPGRADE which I just activated. Since it
will be going to a new owner, how shall I reinstall it?? Should I install
windows me than install the upgrade over that? I realize there will be a
partition that I will have to delete so the poor new owner won't be stuck with
only a 1gig on the hard drive.

What about activation?? Will this person
be able to activate on the machine? I was able to do it with no problem even
though the previous owner had used it on a few desktops I think. I don't want
to screw this up because previously I spent 5 hours reinstalling etc cuz I
didn't know about the partition thing. Nightmare!!!!

BTW Candy,

The change in the processor will more than make up for the loss of RAM in
performance.

JAX

Ouch!!

According to the EULA, you must remove XP from the old machine before you
can install it to a new one. If it is not uninstalled, you will not be able
to activate it on the new one. Now that it has been activated on one machine
it will probably take a phone call to MS to activate on the new machine. It
is a rather painless process though. Just a call and an explanation. Try to
activate via internet. If it is refused you will be given a phone number.

Hi again Candy,

I got side-tracked in my last response. Your best bet for re-installation
is; use the XP disk to do a clean install and you will be prompted to insert
your ME disk to confirm eligibility for upgrade. It will not install any of
ME to interfere with the new OS.

JAX

oh wait Jax, I think I worded things WRONG.

I'm not putting the windows xp on a different laptop. It will be going right
back on the one I'm selling. the new laptop that is coming sat or monday will
already have windows xp on it. I wanted to reinstall the upgrade because it is
licensed to me and I wanted a clean install for the fella who bought it so he
could install it in his own name. am i explaining that right? sorry it's
already christmas here so I'm not thinking right!

Candy

You will have to re-format the HD. To keep from leaving the buyer with a
blank disk, you can re-install ME and whatever you would care to give them.
Perhaps, a few freeware things.

This has become a kind of one on one conversation. If you care to e-mail me,
my address is, take out the y's, (e-mail address removed)

A 64 MB ATI card is AGP. It will use the cards 64 MB of
dedicated VRAM but all AGP cards can access system RAM when
needed.

It is a good idea to use an eraser/shredder program to
remove your personal files from the computer before you give
it away/sell because data and photos can be recovered even
after they are deleted and the disk formatted.
I would suggest that you do a Google for "eraser" or "disk
shredder" and download one of the freeware or demo programs
that you can use (with a boot floppy) to wipe the disk
before you reinstall any software and programs.
