I am trying to run a program from a hard disk (cannot use
auto install or auto run) It will not run until I change
the colors to 256. I know this can be done by changing the
compatibility settings if you are using a desktop item,or
something already up on your "C" drive, but this option is
just not available with a "D" drive item. Any
suggestions,please?

Create a shortcut to the Main Program file for the
application (referencing the "D:" drive) and modify the
properties' [Compatibility] tab for the shortcut you just
made.
NOTE: The icon in the shortcut may rever to the
generic "Windows" file icon when the disc is ejected. This
is normal because the icon can't be accessed from within
the executable file in order to refresh the shell's icon
cache.
