2003 Server and pop3

I'm having a heck of a time getting the pop3 to work on 2003 standard
edition server. The server is also running DNS. I can log on using Outlook
express and check for mail but whenever I send mail to the server I get an
immediate undeliverable report. Any ideas anyone? I also find that in
Outlook Express I have to use the ip address of the mail server for the smtp
and pop3 server address. I would rather have it set to something like
mail.mydomain.com for both. How would I do that?

Yes. Report your problem properly.

For best results, report it in an appropriate newsgroup (one
dealing with whatever the MTS softwrae that you are using is) too.

I did tell you in my original message what I was using. I'll reiterate for
you. I'm using Windows 2003 standard edition pop3 services. There are no
windows 2003 pop3 newsgroups so this one is as good if not better than any
other. In fact, I don't see any 2003 server newsgroups at all. Maybe you'd
do better to read the posts instead of being in an all-fire hurry to
criticize someone who just wants some help.

I can use outlook express to check mail but I can't receive it. Whenever I
send mail to (e-mail address removed) I get an undeliverable. I'm running DNS. DNS
appears to be working just fine. I can ping my server, I can ping my ftp and
websits (all on the same server). I can use nslookup and it tells me
everything is working. I just can't receive e-mail. Yes, I have an mx
record. When I look at the smtp services I see there are messages in the
drop folder but the pop3 server isn't picking them up. I don't even see
anyplace to point my pop3 server to tell it to look in the drop mail folder.
I'm running the firewall built-in to Windows 2003 server and I'm letting the
appropriate ports through. I even turned it off but I still get
non-deliverables.

You *may* (not saying it will work) need to allow UDP above 1023. I've seen
this to be an issue with some services.

Did you try to turn off the built in firewall and test it? Can you telnet on
port 110 to your machine and get a response?

Actually the microsoft.public.windows.server.* newsgroups are the new
generic newsgroup names for Win 2003 and Win 2000. You can also try to post
this to microsoft.public.windows.server.general.

I did try turning the firewall off but it made no difference. I can telnet
to 110. I decided not to waste anymore time with it and I installed iMail
and had it up and running in under 20 minutes. The firewall is only
temporary until my Sonicwall comes in but it seems to be doing a good job.

I went and looked and I still do not see a server newsgroup. I'm sure it
will show up eventually.

Thanks Ace. At least you tried to help me instead of chastising me for not
filling out a proper problem report.

Nah, I don't chastice. You couldn't find thsi group?
microsoft.public.windows.server.general.

There's a bunch of them out there, one of which is the:
microsoft.public.windows.server.dns group that I usually answer questions
in.

About the POP3 services, sounds like something is corrupted in the
installation. Did you possibly try to remove and reinstall POP3 services out
of Add/Remove?

Unless of course you're happy with IMail and want to stick with that? I like
the POP3 services, since it uses your current user accounts.

No, I guess verizon doesn't carry that psrticular newsgroup. In fact there
was nothing listed under windows.server at all and I see you also reference
windows.server.dns. I'm not particularly impressed with Verizon's level of
service.

No, I did not try totally removing the POP3 service but I did delete the
server and even created different servers to no avail. IMail can use current
user accounts or it can use it's own database so you don't have to have a
bunch of user accounts which is perfect for me. I own a computer gaming
center and one of the perks I'm going to give my clients who purchase
memberships is an e-mail address. With IMail I can do it with no problem and
I don't have to create a user account. Plus they can retrieve and send mail
via http which is nice. It's a bit more robust than what comes with server.
Plus it also uses IMAP4 so we can use Outlook instead of Outlook Express.

I like Exchange 2003 but it's priced way too high. To do what I would need
done would cost me ten grand or more. I can do the exact same thing with
iMail for $1400. I would love to see Microsoft beef up the native POP3
service but since Exchange does that I don't see it happening.

Verizon?? Hmm, they probably haven't updated the list from Microsoft's
forums. There's been probably more than 100 groups added in the past year.
Go directly to the newsgroups using Outlook Express. Just go in and tell it
to create a new news account, and the server address is news.microsoft.com
and when you say ok, it will ask you to see the newsgroup lists. You'll see
about 1800 or more groups. Just select the ones you want to see. It's rather
easy.

I have to agree wtih this point here. Exchange is rather nice but for what
you're looking for, rather pricey.

Good luck with everything!
