20000 Server on NT network??

B

Bill

Can I add an Windows 2000 server to an NT network? I read
where the PDC has to be upgraded before the network can be
run in a mixed mode between NT and W2K servers. Is this
true?

The reason I ask is that we have a 20+ user NT network to
which we want to add a Windows 2000 Server. We can't
upgrade the existing NT server to W2k just yet because our
mail system is NT based and we aren't ready to convert
that over and we need the W2K server because we are
loading an application that we are told is not fully
functional running on NT.

Any input is welcome. Thanks!

Bill,

just to reply to one point in your post - Mixed mode means exactly that -
One or more NT Servers in a W2K environment - native mode is a pure W2K
server environment.

Oh..one more...run DCPROMO from the cmd line.....as in 'start', 'run', type
'dcpromo' & hit enter.

Cheers and have fun ;)

Hi Bill,

Let me try to get all of your questions answered:

1. Just install WIndows 2000 Server and add it to the NT domain and it will
be a member server.
2. You run DCPromo from Start/Run.
3. If you still have NT DC's you will want to specifiy Mixed mode when you
run the DCPromo wizard.
4. If you want to run in Native mode all of your DCs need to be 2000.

Thanks,
