2000 Pro --> XP Pro Upgrade Question

Rusty Franklin

Could someone please help!!!

I have a 2000 Professional machine that I want to upgrade to XP
Professional.

I have a brand new OEM version of XP Professional that I just purchased.
Can I do the upgrade with this new software or do I HAVE to have the XP Pro
Upgrade version? I don't want to wipe the machine and start over!!

Thank you.

In order to upgrade over a Windows 2000 installation, you'll need
the "retail upgrade version" of Windows XP Professional. An OEM
version cannot perform an upgrade....it must be installed "clean" on
a reformatted drive or partition.

pretty sure you can do an upgrade, just put it in the cd-rom and check, may have to boot with i

if all you wanted was an upgrade, why didn't you just buy an upgrade, would have been much cheaper

Hindsight!!!! No actually, I needed a full version for a different machine
and bought the wrong one at the wrong time!! I need the full version at a
later date and the upgrade right now! No biggie, just trying to save myself
the extra purchase right now.

So you think I can select the only option presented to me (New Installation)
and I will NOT lose everything on computer and it will act just like an
upgrade?

No. The "New Installation" setup option should only be
used if you wish to install Windows XP on an existing
"empty" drive or partition. Do not select this option if
you do not have an existing empty drive or partition.

The only way you can "upgrade" over an existing Windows
2000 installation is to purchase a conventional "Upgrade Version"
of Windows XP Professional and select the default "Upgrade"
option presented during the setup phase.

The Full Retail version is supposed to also allow for 'Upgrade" installs.

OEM version do not do Upgrade installations.

When it comes to a major change like this I would recommend a doing a full
install rather than an upgrade anyway. It's a good time to clear out any
old programs and download WinXP compatible drivers for peripherals (check
they exist!)

I have to put XP Pro on this machine so that remote access can be gained for
Microsoft Great Plains and some of it's modules. Could the upgrade create
problems with this?

The only way to find out is to backup all your data, then upgrade. But to
reiterate what everyone else has said, you need the upgrade CD or the full
CD of Windows XP to do an upgrade, you CANNOT do it with an OEM CD.
