2000 Pro hangs when it sits idle for long periods of time

I'm running 2000 Pro. I moved to a cable modem. Evber
since, when I leave the pc on and the screensaver comes on
for long periods of time (an hour or two), the screen
saver will disappear and I can move my mouse around the
desktop, but I cannot open folders, programs, or
anything. I typically do not leave an application open
while sitting idle. I have to reboot to gain access. I
cannot even use the talk manager. Any ideas what is
causing this?

Is the computer going into standby? (Control Panel>Power Options) I've had
machines with buggy drivers refuse to come out of standby mode. HTH.
