No version of Windows ever set a password by itself.
It was there all along. However, if you previously validated
yourself against a domain logon and if you now changed
this to a local logon then the old password would no
longer work.

The usual way to resolve the issue two pronged:
- Reset the administrator's password with a boot disk
from here: http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html
- Plan ahead and create a second admin account ***now***
and lock its password away. It's the same as with your
car: Would you consider it prudent to have just a single
set of keys?

The answer there is equally obvious: Plant a spare key
outside your car. If done carefully there is no risk. I know
lots of people who have locked themselves out of their
cars but not a single one whose care was stolen because
of a planted key. I also know lots of people who have
locked themselves out of Windows but none who did it
after creating and filing a second admin account.
