I'm having a lot of trouble trying to get two XP machines to ‘see'
each other.
I have a desktop and a laptop connected by a wired crossover network
cable. The desktop is connected to the internet via a cable modem
(Local Area Connection 2).
Both machines have been fully updated from Windows Update. The Network
Setup Wizard has been run numerous times and Windows has even been
reinstalled.
ICS is working as I can browse the internet on the laptop. However, I
cannot access the shared folders on the laptop from the desktop and I
can't access the shared folders on the desktop from the laptop. Ditto
printers.
Both workstations do have shared folders. In My Network Places the
desktop can only see the shared folders on the desktop. Likewise the
laptop can only see the shared folders on the laptop.
On both machines, when I click on View Network Computers there is a
long pause before I get the message:
"MSHome is not accessible.
You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact
the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions.
The list of servers for this workgroup is currently not available"
I am the only user on both computers and as far as I know I have
administrator rights on both machines.
The Workgroup Name for both machines has been set as MSHOME. Both
machines have separate Computer Names.
My gut feeling is that the problem lies with the desktop because I
have the same difficulties when I try to set up a network between
desktop and an old laptop running Windows 98SE.
I have run ipconfig /all on both machines, with the following results:

I have spent a few days trying to fix this and have tried all the
usual suggestions I have found on-line such as disabling firewalls
etc. – all with no result.
Any suggestions will be exceptionally gratefully received.
