2 versions of msn messenger

hey, I seem to have two version of msn messenger on my machine...
I have 4.7 which comes with windows, and 6.1.
I downloaded 6.1 from the msn website assuming it would simply upgrade.
I also downloaded and installed msn plus if that make any difference...
anyway I keep removing 4.7 from the control panel >> add remove program >>
windows components, however every time I restart my pc, it re-installs it
and logs me on automatically (even though I have set it not to), and runs in
the background, so I don't know it there until suddenly someone sends me a
instant message out of the blue.
does anyone have any idea?
thanks

There are actually two (2) different "Messengers" and they function
differently:

How are MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger different?

You can easily uninstall "MSN MESSENGER" via the Add/Remove Programs
applet in your Control Panel.

Or you can disable "Windows Messenger":

Open "Windows Messenger" and from the Toolbar select
Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck:

"Run this program when Windows starts" and
"Allow this program to run in the background", then
click OK.

Next, open Outlook Express and from the Toolbar select
Tools > Options and under the General tab uncheck
"Automatically log on to Windows Messenger" and click
APPLY.
