2 NICs - Howto assign specific names for DHCP DNS registration?

Good afternoon!

I've got a Windows 2000 Server with 2 NICs. Both NICs are configured
to get the "network settings" (IP, DNS servers, ...) via DHCP and the
server should register itself in DDNS, so that its possible to reach
the system over the hostname, without having to know the IP adress.

This works *very* well - but a bit *too* well for my tasting

The problem is, that the system registred itself in DNS with both
NICs with the same name. So, if I do a nslookup, I get:

C:\>nslookup dewup-fp01.europe.delphiauto.net
Server: dewup-dc04.europe.delphiauto.net
Address: 130.171.200.151

Name: dewup-fp01.europe.delphiauto.net
Addresses: 10.233.7.59, 10.233.7.140

As you can see, there are *TWO* IPs associated to the hostname. That's
*not* what I want

Is there a way to configure Windows 2000 Server in such a way, that
it uses distinct names when registering itself in DNS, depending on
which NIC sends out those requests?

What I'd like to get is, that the 1st NIC registers itself as
dewup-fp01-1 and the 2nd NIC as dewup-fp01-2. But I do *NOT* want
to rename the server, of course.

How can that be done?

You can disable DNS registration for either or both of these connections:

I would think you would want static IPs for connections to a server.

But is there also a way to control the hostname the client sends
to the DHCP server?

I would think you would want static IPs for connections to a server.

We do have static IPs. Assigned via DHCP.

Well, the client doesn't send anything to the DHCP server. There is a
difference between having Alias names for the same computer and having
different computer names for different IP addresses on the same computer.
What happens if you turn off dynamic registration for one of the
connections, and manually create the desired host record in DNS?

Yes, it does. It sends a name and that name is entered in DNS. That's
how DDNS works - how should the server know what name the client wants?
After all, the DNS entry is entirely controlled by the client.

Yep. And I'd like to get the latter.

That would be a workaround, sure. But I'd still like to allow the
client to chose a name.

Heck, under Linux, this would be easy - the DHCP clients for both
NICs would be started in such a way, that they send a certain hostname
to the DHCP server in the DHCP requests. Is something as easy as
this not possible with Windows 2000?

Well, OK - you can configure a DHCP server to register client records in
DNS even if the client does not request it. But, DDNS does not require a
DHCP server and works fine without one.

Can't help you with Linux - you used to be able to do something like what
you want with DHCP option 12, but I doubt it will work with Windows 2000.
