2 network connection icons in control panel

I noticed today that I have 2 network connection icons in
my control panel for Windows XP, both icons have the same
adapter in it, with the same settings... when I disable
one of the icons, I lose access to the net... I know that
there isn't supposed to be 2 network connection icons in
the control panel, so I'd like to get rid of one icon...
my question is, how do I go about getting rid of one of
the icons?

Win XP sets up two connections when using the wizard and
almost always you end up with 3.

Remove Local Area connection 2 and any bridge connection
that might show up....

do this unless you are running interconectin sharing with
other pc's and this pc is the gateway.
