1G RAM reported as 512

My BIOS reports 1G installed. SANDRA reports two banks
each of 512 memory installed. I've swapped out each stick
of memory and both work, and they each work in either
bank and physical memory is reported by XP system
information as 512. But, when both are installed, system
information only sees one bank of 512 memory. Prior to
installing XP, Win98SE saw the whole 1G.

Any advice?

If you open Task Manager, and click the Performance tab,
what does it say for total physical memory?

i had the same problem.. from win98 to XP
but i discovered that after removing them and putting them back in, one time
they registered the correct value and have ever since..
I thought i had a bad stick, so tried one stick, and then the other.. Then
after many tries, they just began to be recognized.. Yup, strange, but true
here as well.
Now all is well..

The System Information utility in Windows XP is known to report an
incorrect figure for RAM in some instances.

Open Control Panel - System. What does it say at the bottom of the
General tab for total RAM? If it is 1 gb then all is well.

If not the use Start - Run - MSCONFIG.
Go to the BOOT.INI tab and click on the Advanced Options button.

If there is a checkmark on the /MAXMEM= line then clear the quantity
field on that line and also click on the checkbox to clear it.

Click on Apply and OK as needed to exit.

Reboot to put the changes into effect.

System Information has bugs in this. Check instead at Control Panel -
System. Bottom of the General page
