Ok

This has probably been posted before but I have tried everything I can find
to possibly resolve this. I have just re-installed Windows XP Professional on
my Dell Inspiron 1150, the spec is as follows:

1.8GHz
512Mb RAM
Broadcom 440x 100/10 Network adapter

connected via ethernet cable to:

Motorola Surfboard SB4200i with a 10MB broadband connection to Telewest
Broadband.(UK)

All the drivers are installed and up to date but I seem to be getting an
automatically assigned 169.254... IP address. Im getthing no hardware
conflicts whatsoever. Things I've tried:

The usual modem recyle ( computer off, modem off, modem on computer on ).

Stopping and starting DHCP services Disabling network card and re-enabling it.

Disabling and re-enabling the different services, clients and protocols (
except TCP/IP ) on the network connection.

Winsock fix

Installing the ipac_off.inf file Releasing and renewing the IP in dos and
under network details.

I have contacted my ISP, they have no problem at thier end, went through
several checks and they say its a local problem at my end.

None of the above have had any success, is there anything else I could try?

Thanks in advance, Stuart

Can your computer get an IP address if you connect it to someone
else's cable modem or broadband router? If not, your Broadcom NIC
might be defective.

Can someone else's computer get an IP address from your cable modem?
If not, your cable modem might be defective.

Turn the cable modem off and back on before switching it from one
computer to another.

when you got an ip of 169.254.x.x, that's mean your computer can't
connect to LAN, so it's giving you a private ip address of 169.254.x.x
this would be caused by registry crash. here's how to fix it:
click start > run > regedit > browse to
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ > delete the folders winsock
and winsock 2 > restart your computer. Then start > control pannel >
network connection > tools > folder options > view tab > ensure that
show hidden files and folders is selected > ok. Right click on local
area connection then click on propertys > install > protocal > have
disk > browse > browse to the c:\windows\inf folder > find the file
called nettcpip.inf > click open > ok > choose tcp/ip then click ok >
close out of propertys and network connections > restart your computer.

and also there's a good article about it at
