I have an Motorolla Surf Board 5100 modem and can't get on the internet. All
i get is an 169 IP address. I have tried everthing imaginable. Does anyone
know if it is my OS (XP Home) or is it with my modem. I have gone round and
round with my cable provider and all they want to do is send me to Dell or
MS. If it is my modem I will glady by a different one. But is it my modem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why do I get 169.254.x.x IP?

Symptom: The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has reserved
169.254.0.0-169.254.255.255 for Automatic Private IP Addressing. If the
computer can't get ip from DHCP, APIPA provides an address that is
guaranteed not to conflict with routable addresses.

Resolutions: 1) Make sure you have good connection.
2) Check the hardware and settings.
3) Make sure the DHCP is working.
4) For the test, you can assign static ip. If static ip works, it is
possible DHCP issue. If static ip doesn't work, check the hardware or
connection.

Have you escalated the problem to senior techs at the cable company? Has the
cable company physically checked your connection at your house?

Can you try another computer in place of yours? Can you try connecting your
computer to another somewhere (take it to a friends house)?

With a single computer, and all equipment owned by you (?), you don't have a lot
of diagnostic ability. You're going to have to find a way to check or replace
each component, until the problem is resolved.
- Try a different modem.
- Try different cable (Ethernet?).
- Try a different network adapter.
- Make sure the network adapter drivers are current with your operating system.
- Does the cable company make you use any of their software? Make sure that
it's compliant with your operating system.

Trying a different modem may be the most obvious solution. But it's not the
only one.

Chuck
