1603 Nightmare (long...)

Hi all,

My work machine is having all sorts of problems with installs...

I have one program that will install (or seems to) but then when you go to
open it, nothing happens. It is not a 100% vital program, but this is
frustrating.

The main program I am trying to install (Autodesk 3ds max) will get to a
certain point during installation (the last thing I can read on the status
bar is 'writing registry values') then just stops. I get the splash sceen
informing me that nothing installed and the location of the log file.

The log file reports 1603 - which I know is rediculously generic.

I have done all kinds of things to try and sort this out but nothing has
worked so far.

I have done all updates. I am on XP pro SP3.

I have deleted all files for previous versions of the software. There is no
'folders' in the registry for the software - however there are several keys
(if I try Edit > Find and search for 3ds in the registry editor).

I have got a verbose log of the install - and tried this
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/08/01/446328.aspx

But there was no 'return value 3' - only return value 1.

As advised here -
http://forums.whatthetech.com/Error_1603_Driving_me_insane_t107668.html&gopid=605913#entry605913

- I have installed Subinacl and run the reset.exe as set out here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/949377 - Advanced
troubleshooting section.

I am at a total loss as to how to fix this. Is there anything else I can do?
How do I find what the problem is?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

most often the issue with installing
programs is not a windows issue.

instead it is an issue that occurs from
either the program being incompatible
with the version of the o.s. "or"

something is installed in the o.s. that
is preventing the program from setting
up.

--------------------

my first suggestion is to go the the
programs home site and look for faq's
on the issues with that program.

keep in mind that some programs are
hard coded to be compatible with an
exact version of the o.s.

so if the program worked under sp2
but no longer under sp3, then the
makers of the program need to provide
you with an update "or"

you will have to buy an updated version
of the program or uninstall sp3 from
your system.

---------------------

if the program was compatible with an
older o.s. like xp sp2 or sp1 then perhaps
the following can help:

one method is to install an older o.s. on
a different drive then install that program
on it

or you can install virtual pc or virtual
box in sp3, then install the older o.s.
in virtual pc or virtual box.

once you create a virtual environment for
the older o.s. to function in sp3,

you can then install that program in that
older o.s.

SOLVED!

The solution was to un-tick an option during installation.

The option is to install the 'Satelite network rendering' capability (which
has a port number along side it)

With this option taken out, the install went fine!

Any ideas why this would have caused the trouble? Would this be linked to
..NET?

glad you got it solved.

but I really couldn't say why
the setup required you to
untick something.

none the less the problem
is solved.

good job!
