16 color Video resolution after XP Home SP2 reinstall

A friends Compaq EVO computer had a bad hard drive. The computer was running
XP Home. Replaced the drive with a used one, and used the friends Compaq
restore CD to reinstall the OS. It did a complete format and then installed
(Horrors) ME !! I found the proper XP Home OEM and did an upgrade.
Everything went well, except the video resolution is very low. The
resolution in DISPLAY only shows the 16 color option, and the slider will not
move. Device manager shows that no VGA driver has been installed for the
hardware. The original driver CD "ViewSonic" will not run, because an error
message says: "Resolution is too LOW" so I can not install the driver for the
monitor, and the other hardware.
I have tried to "REINSTALL" the vieso driver from the XP home OS, the
ViewSonic
CD and windows can not find it. I have not tried going to the internet and
seeing if Windows installer can find it there. There is also a problem with
the USB ports.
Trying to install drivers in Safe Mode reported the same too low a
resolution problem, and would not attempt to load any drivers.

Where can I find and HOW DO I LOAD A VGA DRIVER?
Do some XP home OEM CD's come with a minimum driver set, expecting that the
manufacturer will provide a drivers CD?
Did the resolution get so low because of the initial Microsoft ME install?

Hopefully, you've already figured out that your first course of
action is to go to Compaq's support site and search for an XP
driver for the display adapter. If not, start here.

Software and Driver downloads
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...+evo&tool=softwareCategory&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en

While you're there, look for other XP drivers which may not
have been available on the installation CD. One that you may
need to install is the chipset driver.

If you're still having problems, post back with the make and
model number of the Compaq.

Good luck
