16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem

I am suddenly receiving an error message, C:\WINNT\system32\CONFIG.NT. The
system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

I read Article 305521 regarding this error and followed the instsructions on
how to solve it, but to no avail. I am baffled as to why I'm receiving this
message, because I am not using any new applications nor have I installed or
downloaded any new ones. The only downloads which have taken place are the
automatic Windows Update.

Could someone please tell me (1) how to rid myself of this error message, and
(2) how to locate and identify the 16-bit application the error message is
referring to?
