16-Bit MS-DOS Subsystem (2nd Post)

I am suddenly getting a 16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem error message ..." This
system file is not suitable for the application... Please Close".

I have read two articles and followed the steps to resolve this problem.
From what I've read in the articles, I assume that this message may appear
with Windows XP operating system, but I am running Windows 2000 Professional.

I have not installed any new applications. The only things installed are
the automatic Windows Updates. Could someone please tell me how to rid
myself of this message?

Thank you

I am getting the same error when running a program called ifsame. This
program has been running fine for the last 2 years on my machine,
until the last group of security patches from Microsoft.

I fixed the problem on my machine. I had to uninstall the following hotfixes...
in this order.....
841356
834707
824151
840987

as soon as they were un-installed the dos applications worked.

I receive this message just as the desktop is loading. I've tried everything
I know how to do to find this "16-bit application." As I've stated in my
previous posts, the only thing downloaded were the automatic windows updates.

In trying to resolve this problem using the directions given by the various
articles, I get a "No destination specified" message after each command. I
don't know what else to do. Can you please help?

Maybe the security update is my problem as well, because I haven't had this
happen before. The only thing I can pinpoint is that it began after the last
round of automatic updates.

I had a similar problem, it was apparently caused by a background app;
leastways when I uninstalled it the problem went away.
Try installing msconfig, http://www.perfectdrivers.com/howto/msconfig.html
In the Services Tab, hide all MS then disable the rest.
In Start-up Tab, disable all
Reboot, if problem has gone, then back to msconfig, and then I'm afraid its
a process of elimination to find problem app.

Carol:
I'm having the same problem. All of a sudden I get the same error
message you report when I try to run my DOS version of Quicken.
I've been told that creating a custom "pif" file should allow the
program to work, but I am her looking for someone to tell me how
to do that.

Meanwhile I'm using a program called "dosbox" It works but I would
prefer that my program run natively.

Good Luck

Richard
