16 bit color issue...

Jim Hubbard

For some reason, my XP Pro box keeps defaulting to 16 bit color when
restarted. I change it back to 32 bit, but it changes on restart back to 16
bit.

Has anyone seen this odd behaviour before?

Many times you'll see a drop to 16 colors, (not 16-bit color) and it's
caused by a damaged graphics card driver. In those cases, loading an
updated driver from the manufacturer site usually helps.

If you really mean 16 "bit" color as opposed to just plain 16 colors
then here's an idea. If you are running with a high screen resolution
on a large monitor and your video card doesn't have the memory to
support 32 bit color at that higher resolution, it might be dropping
back to 16 bit color. Reduce the resolution a notch or two and see if
the 32 bit setting sticks after a reboot. If so, you need more video
memory or a newer video card.

Thanks Joe. But, that didn't stop it.

I have downloaded the latest nVidia drivers and that didn't help either.

Still have to change manually at each restart to 32 bit color scheme.

Maybe the monitor driver needs to be removed, repaired, or updated. Or
change its refresh rate.. just something to try, no reason it should
help. The graphics card might be failing too. Try removing it,
reinserting it (with power off). A BIOS setting might be causing a
problem.. I don't know what setting, just a thought.

To see if a startup program is cutting the color back, run msconfig, and
set to (not) "Load Startup Items". Reboot and see if it's changed to
the lower resolution.
