15 minute bootup

I was asked to 'fix' my 70 year old mother-in-law's computer, "seems to be
running real slow". Well, it takes 15 minutes to bootup and although it does
run it's very, very, very slow. Be advised, I am not a computer tech or a
power user but I have used a pc since the IBM AT and can usually follow a
good computer tech's instructions.

HP Pavilion xt938
1.3 GHz Athlon Processor
128 mb Ram
60 gb hard drive
XP Home Edition with SP1 installed.

Her McAfee anti-virus was outdated so I installed and ran Grisoft AVG, no
viruses found.

I installed & ran Ad-Aware, 28 parasites found & deleted.

I installed & ran Spybot S&D, another 78 parasites found & deleted.

I ran Microsoft's Disk Clean-up, all boxes checked.

I ran Norton Disk Doctor from the CD drive, 250 +/- problems found and
corrected.

The above tasks have taken close to two days & nights to process and none
have helped. I didn't receive the HP/XP disks with the computer and am
waiting for them in the mail. Any suggestions while I wait are greatly
appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
DirtRoad

hi,
Go to the run command off the start button and type in "msconfig" (no
quotes) have a look at the startup tab and try turning off some items and
restarting. You will need to be selective and methodical try one at a time
and restart to see if the PC speeds up, if you are not sure what it is you
are turning off try searching the web first or post what is in the list
before you start.

best of luck
Neil

The ram amount that you have listed is very minimal , increasing the ram to
a least 256 will increase the speed of operating more than any other change.
Normal maintance will need to be done on a regular basis. This includes
removing unneeded programs from the Startup Menu , running Disk Cleanup and
Defrag. Jym

u can also make a HP/XP recovery disk program for the computer by accessing
it's restore program, it is one of the features that HP uses, once u make a
recovery disk onto a cd/dvd, it then deletes/removes itself out of the hard
drive.

however the recovery portion of the hp is in a seperate partition of the
hard drive... so ur hp recovery is actually embedded in your hard drive.

just launch the program in one of the hp home solutions program and be
prepared to use almost 6 cdr's for this or 1 dvdr.

it will then make a bootable vision of xp home edition when u need to
reinstall xp.
