It provides networking via firewire (IEEE1394)

.
Is this only for networking computers on a network or is
this also for internet. I have a cable modem and I have
the network card information for that, I also have the
1394 Net Adapter card.

If you have a network card that connects via firewire, it should work on
your cable modem.

Sony calls it "iLink", most say Firewire or IEEE 1394. Much faster then USB
and often used on Optical external drives and many VideoCamera's.

Toshiba told me that if I wasn't going to 'Network' it was quite safe to
disable it.

It can be used to set up a network with another computer that has it as
well, though it is more usual in PCs to use the 'Ethernet' connection
instead. The connection can also be used to support high speed external
devices - hard disks, CD drives, though again on PCs the USB 2.0
connection is more usual. The main use it gets is for digital
camcorders - especially Sony, who call it 'I-Link'
