I want to connect my camcorder to my computer so I can transfer home movies on to a dvd. I was told to purchase a 1394 firewire. I brought it home and neither end fits my computer or camcorder. Is there more than one type of firewire? Sorry first time I have ever dealt with this. Thanks for any help. Debi

There are two sizes of the cable. Most camcorders have the mini version interface and most
computers have the full size interface. You just need a converter cable or a replacement
cable.

Yes, you need to have at least (1) 1394 port on your computer. However, your camcorder should have come with a special cable specifically for your device. Though your device is 1394 compatible, you need to make sure your 1394 card supports the connector for your camcorder. You will see the that the physical sizes of the different connectors vary. Hope this helps.

Your computer must have a compatible port to match what your
camcorder has output port has.

If your computer does not have Firewire IEEE 1394 ports on
the motherboard or an add-in card, you can buy an add-in
card. There are several types of 1394 cables, need to study
the manual that came with your camera and get the hardware
you need so it is all correct.

You will need the correct software also.

There are 4 wire and 6 wire cables and several connector
types... you need to have the correct cables.

.....neither end fits my computer or camcorder....

Look in the documentation for your camcorder.
Is your camcorder a DV camcorder?
Does it have a spot to plug in a small 4 pin 1394 cable?
If not, you can't capture video whith firewire.

Is it an old style High-8 or VHS?

Does it only have a connector for analog out or S-video?

Does the motherboard have onboard 1394 support or do you
have 1 1394 card in on of the PCI slots?

What type of computer do you have? when you look at all
the places to plug cables in, can you find a plug that
matches the shape as the firewire cable?

If you have a 4>6 pin cable, and there's no place on your
camera or computer to plug it in, it would seem you don't
have a DV camera and your computer doesn't have firewire
support. (no card installed...)
