Firewire nightmares, anyone?

Hello group.

I have a really peculiar lack of firewire support in XP home edition and I
have done everything I can but reload or give up on using firewire. I run
win xp home edition, all drivers current and updates on a regular basis. I
have used home XP for a few years and have had only a few glitches, but I'll
be damned if I can figure this one out. My Mother board ( P4 titan 553,
GA-81EX series, intel 845E chipset ) has 3 firewire inputs on board and six
USB 2.0 all are enabled in the system BIOS.

All the USB ports work fine. About a year ago my Sony Camcorder was
recognized as 1394 device, but when it was active it removed my cable modem
( via USB) from the network connections and replace it with the camcorder.
It gave the camcorder an IP address. I had to keep doing a system restore
to a previous time when I had the cable modem running, and then it would not
recognize the camcorder.

Now it will not recognize any Firewire device. I have an external HD, and
an external DVD burner ( both can use USB 2.0 or firewire). My system
recognizes both fine as USB, not as Firewire

Device Mgr says VIA OHCI IEEE 1394 host controller is enabled and working
properly, as well as all USB devices. No yellow question marks or alerts
anywhere in Device Mgr. It says all devices working properly. But I can't
get it to recognize ANY firewire device.

I purchased an EXTERNAL wired hub that connects by USB 2.0 port. It has four
USB 2.0 ports and three firewires. Win XP recognizes the HUB and all USB 2.0
devices attached. It will not recognize the firewire inputs. External
hardrive and External DVD burner do fine through Hubs USB ports but not
firewire. Sony Camcorder has yet to be recognized.

I recently installed an INTERNAL PCI firewire card, with one 1394 and two
USB 2.0 ports. System recognizes the card and the USB ports - not the
firewire. ahh!

OK. what is it going to take to get this thing to recognize firewire? I
have removed all USB and firewire devices from device mgr, reinstalled,
added and removed hardware - at least 4, 5 times. NO dice. I have three
different pieces of hardware that have firewire inputs, and my system say
each device is working properly. ?? Is there a secret firewire refusal
gremlin that strikes certain systems? XP help sites say there is NO
independent drivers needed for firewire. XP is supposed to be compatible.
I suspect it is a registry or network problem but me and the cable modem guy
can't figure it out and they won't come and look anymore. Any suggestions
about where to look, what to tweak etc, will be appreciated.

Just a thought, but has it occurred to you that maybe the cause of the
problem is the cable modem and/or its drivers, rather than the other way
round?

Yes, that was a thought by the Road Runner people also, who brought out a
new modem. I have disconnect the modem, and even removed all network
settings, disabled DHCP in device mgr. We thought perhaps the IEEE host
controller for firewire might be conflicting with the network device. I have
set restore points to save when network settings and modem are fine. Then
removed them all and rebooted so there is no network in device mgr. Firewire
still won't work.

That's true, "M". and service pack one has already been installed and my XP
home has been upgraded as needed. Still no firewire.

Any other suggestions?

Have you looked for a BIOS fix for the onboard USB and
Firewire hardware?
