Based on the reviews at Tom's Hardware (www.tomshardware.com) between the
9800Pro 128 and 9800Pro 256, it looks like it doesn't noticeably improve ...
anything. Maybe it will in the future, but you'll probably want a whole new
card then :)

My 128's in the mail, and I can't wait!

Currently no. Later on it probably will. If your current card is ok I would
wait a little while till the next version of the ati and nvidia cards come
out as to spend the money on an upgraded current design. Both companys are
coming out with new cards with new gpu this year.

If you want to run your games at 1600x1200x32 and 4xFSAA you'll HAVE to have
256MB of video RAM (at least w/Max Payne 2).

so riddle me this.... why does the 265meg 9600 pro cost less then the 128 MB
version?

Hell if I know -- the vagaries of the marketplace? I can't really run any games
('cept console ports like BloodRayne or ETMatrix) in 1600x1200x32 w/4xFSAA.

Most ATI 9600s have 128 bit wide memory pathways.
Some of the bottom basement (cheapo SE models) cards have only 64 bit wide
memory pathways
and slower memory

....and never with the 9600pro gpu because it doesn't have the power to use
the settings that require tha much memory.

It could be. It depends on your cpu speed, which video card you're talking
about, and if you can afford it.
If you mean the 9800 Pro, it's faster for high resolutions with FSAA and AF,
and it may be faster without them in next year's games.

Are the increased memory worth it?

Not really... The NEW PCIx cards may really make use of it (high end
models)... in top rez perhaps.

My Ti4200 has 64mb on it... with max settings, it doesnt come close to
the ATi9800Pro I have... but even if it did, it would only run that
much slower... under 10fps.

Bullshit. Try running Max Payne 2 at 1600x1200x32 and turning 4x FSAA on on a
128MB card. The game will actually TELL you it requires more memory than 128MB.
Not yet in current games.

Someone in this thread made a good point. The 256MB cards frequently come
w/slower memory than 128MB cards. I've read somewhere this is because the newer
cards are using DDRII which has a slower leadoff time (for the first byte).
Hell if I know -- the vagaries of the marketplace? I can't really run any
games
('cept console ports like BloodRayne or ETMatrix) in 1600x1200x32 w/4xFSAA.
