What scans?
Hi!

Thanks for replying, but something is broke and due to those files, my
scans
are only on those, and they are microsoft related, and are causing a
problem
as scans can't get thru them all.

Appreciate your help! You can see with this number of files, that
scanning
is impossible. ...

What are you scanning _with_? And please be specific, including
version number. The reason I ask is that I use ZoneAlarm, and as
it has moved from version 6.5 to recent 7.0.... versions the virus
scanning has gotten more thorough so that cabinet (*.CAB) files
are scanned sslloowwllyy (the cure is to exclude them from the scan).
13,000 files isn't a lot these days, ten times that many is more the
current order of magnitude. But 13,000 files which individually
slow down a scan is another story.

So what are you scanning with, and is it sensitive to particular kinds
of files, and what is the type (extension, the three letters after the dot
in the full filename) of the files giving you trouble?

spyware..which sits forever as is scanning 13,000 files and who knows how
many microsoft, or msn adds to it daily whatever they may be.

OK, but neither PA Bear nor any other interested observers will
be fully informed until you tell us _what_ spyware, and _ which_
release, precisely, of that spyware software you are using. You
may think this is over-precise, but these things really matter,
believe me, from personal experience.

I assume you're referring to an anti-spyware application: Which one (e.g.,
Windows Defender; Ad-Aware; Spybot; CounterSpy; SpySweeper)?

A Windows Live MVP colleague tells me that...
08E84DB0-66CF-4546-B510-8A6B12D9BF8B.WindowsLiveContact

....is the format Windows Live Messenger uses when one selects Contacts to be
encrypted (Messenger: Tools | Options | Security).

If you're anti-spyware app (/whatever/ it is) gets bogged down scanning
them, configure it to Ignore them.

If I recall 08E84DB0-66CF-4546-B510-8A6B12D9BF8B.WindowsLiveContact is the format Windows Live Messenger uses when one selects
Contacts to be encrypted.
- To toggle off/on Messenger/Tools/Options/Security

Toggling on will change the Contact list in Windows Explorer(user profile\Contacts folder) to reveal the name/nickname
field(however you've it set).

Should be ***Toggling Off*** will reveal the name/nickname. Toggling 'on' uses the encrypted format mentioned earlier. Sorry, had
the toggle backwards(been a while since I looked and turned off that option).

Hi, What do you mean my complaint is well know?

As regards uninstalling live messenger, it would not remove whatever stuff
microsoft has put on my system due to apparently me getting a live.com email,
with which i do nothing but use it to forward, and somehow, live and msn
live, whatever that is, as I do not use msn (dont know what that is.)

It wouldnt' be prudent to uninstall xp and reload.

So, not sure what you mean by well known?

You mean here in this forum?

Hi again,

I went to that top link today, and is no forums. I've gone there before
when first had problems. A person writes back with a solution having nothing
to do with the problem and as I see is the same area am not very hopeful.

There is no selection (topic given) for my question, but I put it in one of
them anyway, but if is as before, they do not know how to help.

The topics are narrow, and aren't forums. I was looking for that, but now
that I went to it realize is not what I need for resolution.

I was hoping for a forum.

So, we'll see what the reply is, and I do so very much appreciate you wrote
with that, I've been looking for that area a while, and bookmarked it.

Take care,
casey

Casey

I never mentioned forums but the second link does lead you to
newsgroups.

The production of large number of files related to Messenger Contacts is
recorded many times in Google but I could not see any recorded solution.
You are not alone in complaining.

Since my post you have had a reply from Winston and you should look into
what he suggests.

If you read the whole thread you would appreciate that the complaint is
about the excessive number of files generated by Messenger relating to
it's Contact list. Casey's frustration comes from seeing so many files
when scanning with anti-spyware software. The problem is with Messenger
not the anti-spyware software.

You used to use Messenger! Is the answer from Winston the answer as
there are many complaints by others recorded in Google voicing the
complaint Casey has and there are no recorded solutions.

No, OP's original complaint was that scans with his anti-spyware
(apparently) application kept bogging down whilst scanning these files and
he didn't know what they are. We've told him what they are and how they got
there. If the bogging-down bothers him, he should be able to configure the
anti-spyware application to ignore the files...or he can delete them (and
lose all of his encrypted Messenger contact data).

There is still something odd here. On my system, with ZoneAlarm,
the virus scan is what takes the time (around half an hour, with the
..CAB files excluded from the scan, for around 170,000 files currently).
The _spyware_ scan is an almost trivial afterthought by comparison.
Again on my system, all files are scanned. I suspect I could scan
another few score thousand files, maybe even a few hundred
thousand, without becoming concerned about how long it took.
What kind of file, and what kind of spyware scanning software,
can lead to a time-consuming slowdown? Limited minds, at least
mine, want to know.
