I have, at present moment, 101 pictures in My Pictures of various size and
jpg, bmp or gif. I had just added another to make 101. When I went to select
it as my background, the list of all my pictures but 2 are gone in the
Display properties. The only two that show up are the one I am presently
using, and Bliss.bmp.

Ok, so I delete a background that I am not interested in anymore. Now
everything shows up.

I am using XP Pro SP2. I am unable to reproduce this problem in my XP SP1a &
Windows 2004 SP4 virtual machines. If this really is a problem, then there
should be a workaround until SP3.. I run as non-admin, therefore i'd like to
not put them somewhere where I can't write.

I have never seen your particular problem in the many computers I repair. I
currently have over 250 pictures in my own "My Pictures" folder.

I have to wonder if some 3rd party program you have installed has placed a
limiting factor on your folder.

Start, Control Panel, Display, Desktop, Background.

Is this where the limit is being encountered rather than there being a
limit on the "My Pictures" folder. Is it a limit on the number of files
in the Stationery folder?

It may be. I just don't know anyone who has that many backgrounds listed so
I can't even check.
