100% cpu when modify subtotal components

Have a XP pro user with a largish (though not large) spreadsheet who
finds that when he modifies some of the subtotal components that it
takes approx 30 mins for the spreadsheet to recalculate itself. Task
manager process shows 99%/100% use by excel.exe and the applications
tab of task manager shows the actual excel file alternating between
running and not responding until the recalculation completes. As said
before the removing/inserting of subtotals involves takes an
inordinately long time.

Found and applied all the suggestions in microsoft knowledge base
article 324557 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324557)
however recalculation after changing subtotal components still takes
an eternity.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Though this isn't a direct answer to your question, you may want to set
Calculation to manual while working in that file - use F9 when you want
intermittent updates and set calculation to Automatic when you're ready to
close and save the file.
