100% CPU Usage

I have a Celeron 800 ... 256 k RAM ...when I boot up, I
go to Window Task Manager and I have nothing showing on
the Applications Tab ... 27 items on the Process Tab (
some of which appear to be duplicates) ... and on the
Performance Tab I have 100% CPU usage and 170 PF usage
(what ever that is). Whn I try to sytart a program it
usually craters ... I suspect its to "100% CPU usage
thats getting me ... any suggestions?

look under the processes tab and determine whci process is using your cpu
resources

it tells me I have 3 "svchost.exe"s running ... one of
them is using ~60 % of the CPU

I recently had to reinstall XP from my Toshiba recovery
discs, and I have been having the EXACT SAME PROBLEM.
svchost.exe and wincffg.exe are hogging every bit of my
CPU and causing things to run horribly slow, even if I
just have one program running. Does anybody know how to
fix this?

It's me again, and i've done some research.

There seem to be two schools of thought on this issue.
One is that it is caused by a corrupt msconfig.exe and
can be fixed by inserting your XP CD and at the command
prompt, typing:

EXPAND-RX:\I386
\MSCONFIG.EX_Z:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\BINARIES

This is supposed to extract a new copy of MSCONFIG.EXE.
I found this information on an earlier post (Dated the
21st, i think.)

The other explanation is that a virus is using
svchost.exe to consume CPU processing and that you should
run all kinds of spybots and kill the virus.

I haven't tried either of these yet, but will, and I'll
tell you how they work. I hope this helps.
