I see that Maplins are doing an offer for twelve 1800 mAh NiMH AA

I got one of their other offers, 12 2300mAh NiMh cells for ?12.49,
so far they seem fine.

Why pay 83p each to use them once,
when you can get rechargeable for £2.30 each and use them over a thousand
times?

They are rechargeable. I have never seen a NiMH battery that wasn't.

but the store might not carry all the stock in the catalogue - especially
the smaller ones.

There is an option on the website to check stock in your local store.

That sounds like a brilliant feature.

But I have looked for this on their website and can't find it anywhere.
Can someone help me out please.

Select the item you're interested in, the scroll down to:

"To find nearest store, please select product and enter postcode"

then select the item's code from the drop-down, enter your postcode, and
wait for the pop-up window.

Best Regards,
Alex.

The only problem with 2300mah NiMh AA cells is that they are just a bit
larger in diameter than 1800's and are a tight fit in some rechargers
and powered devices. The recharger size is a problem since the
additional diameter can result in the cell failing to meet the contacts.
The device problem results in some battery case covers not closing.

Is this the bargain it seems or is there a catch which someone here
might know about?

You may find the cheaper ones discharge themselves quicker if not used.
Seems to apply to my cordless drill power packs anyway.

You may also find they aren't rated as accurately as the
better name-brands like Sanyo or PowerEX. Many of the
low-end cells also have rather poor current, high internal
resistance, though for cordless drill packs a sintered-plate
type cell might be more optimal, providing you found one
with ample capacity.

Surely the length would be a factor, not the diameter?

I don't have a micrometer to do the measurements, but the Panasonic
2300mah AAs that I purchased recently are perhaps a fraction of a
millimeter too large diameter and consequently difficult to fit into the
molded slots in a charger but especially in several scanner radios and a
logitech cordless mouse. Trimming the label jackets helps, but they are
still a very tight fit. There is no question that the diameter is
greater than any 1800mah AA cells I have.
