1 XP, Multiple PCs

It is my understanding that Windows XP will install on
only one PC. My brother had a copy of Windows XP installed
on his computer; the copy was just lying around. My
dilemma is that I need XP on my own PC, and we have just
the one copy of XP lying around.

I was wondering if it was possible to purchase a license
to install on multiple PCs, and if it is possible, I would
like to know where I can purchase said license, and
whether or not this is a feasible solution.

You do not have a copy lying around. That license to use that copy has been
used on your brothers PC.
However - since you have the media you can just purchase another license to
use it on another PC.
If you are US based you can buy just an additional license from

see the link on the right hand side - Here's the easiest way to get an
additional license

You'll find a new license in the box with the new installation CD.

Multiple computers means multiple licenses and I don't think Microsoft will
sell a license any cheaper than the OS itself.

That's correct The rule is quite clear. It's one copy (or one
license) for each computer.

There's nothing new here. This is exactly the same rule that's
been in effect on every version of Windows starting with Windows
3.1. The only thing new with XP is that there's now an
enforcement mechanism.

Yes you can buy extra licenses (see
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/addlic.asp). But
it's not generally a good deal. The problem is that Microsoft
sells additional licenses at only a small savings over the list
price. You're almost certainly better off just buying a complete
second copy from a discount source.

not true , It will install ans many times as you want.
It's activating it that can only be done a few times.

Just Install it, If it's been over 120 days it
willactivate online, otherwise it's a automated phone
call.

besides you can install it for 30 days on a 1000
computers if you want , no license required.

But installing it, using the same product key, is a violation of the
EULA.
