1 unread message on user login

One of my user accounts has a message underneath the
login button that states '1 unread message' despite there
being no unread messages. This appears to be interfering
with other users accounts by clogging up the ADSL dial up
so I would like to resolve it. One obvious solution
would be to delete the account and set up a new one but I
was unsure whether this would leave the unresolved issue
ticking away in the background. Any ideas. Mail
client=Outlook 2003.
