I have about 15 machines that being affected by the 1005 Error whenever a
scan is started (Full/Quick/Custom). I ahve searched the newsgroups and read
the posts from March of 2006 about the 0x8050800c and the disks are neither
dynamic nor did running chkdsk fix the problem. The version of Defender on
thses machines is as shown:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0
Engine Version: 1.1.2503.0
Definition Version: 1.18.2637.4

Any help would be great.

Hi Fintan, GraySupport,

Could you provide us with some more information on the machines where this
error surfaces?

What kind of hardware are they running? What kind of software are they
running? Any information which you think might be helpful in us being able
to diagnose why you're hitting this error.

Thanks!

Sorry for the delay, I forgot to click notify of replie.

I have various Dell Optiplex GX systems (150, 260, 270, 280), Windows XP SP2
with all the updates including .Net Framework v1, 2 & 3. Hard disk is
labelled Basic by Disk Management and is partitioned into two C: and D:.

Current version of Defender is
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0
Engine Version: 1.1.2704.0
Definition Version: 1.20.2741.2
Product ID: 81664-285-9036197-04910

If I click OK to the error and leave it for a while, I am able to run a
manual scan.

Event View shows Event ID 1005 with this description:
Windows Defender scan has encountered an error and terminated.
Scan ID: {353CC4CF-A25E-4FEB-8935-F7272A2B3F5E}

Error Code: 0x8050800c
Error description: An unexpected problem occurred. Install any available
updates, and then try to start the program again. For information on
