I keep getting an item when I scan that comes up and I click remove but get
an error 0x80501001. I don't know how to remove it.
I've tried other things where you try to find and delete the file, then
remove all previous restore points, but doesn't seem to be working or removed
by other spyware removers (AdAware)

What is the "item"? Are we supposed to guess? Windows Defender lists names
and resources. Why isn't that information in your post? While we are it,
what level (version) of Windows Defender are you using? Click the down arrow
to the right of the circled ? and click About Windows Defender. Post the
three version numbers in addition to the above information.

It would help if you could be more descriptive as to what item it is that WD
is finding that is giving you the error. That way the experts on here will be
better able to help you.

Hello Jestercard,

This error will occur if a threat is detected inside of a container such as
a ZIP file, RAR archive, etc.

The "remove" action cannot (in most cases) be applied to an object inside of
such containers, without deleting the entire container.

The issue is that you may have a ZIP file with tons of non-malicious file
in it, but one or more "bad" files as well that are detected. The question
is: how should we handle that? Deleting the entire container may
inadvertently delete the clean files as well, and that might not be what you
want.

For now you can check if the ZIP file has anything else inside of it that
you want to keep. If not, just delete the ZIP file yourself and you will have
removed the threat.

If you really want to keep the ZIP file around but do not want to see this
error (and again, you can expect that in the future we will have a better
story here - at least not such a cryptic error message) you can disable
scanning inside archives. Clear the checkbox for "Scan inside archives" in
the Options section under the Tools menu. Generally, threats inside archives,
while good to know about, are not "active", meaning they can't do anything
bad to your system while inside the archive.

-and- -or-

To delete all but the last System Restore point.

Open Disk Cleanup via Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tººls.
It will scan the system first. Click the More Options tªb.
Now click the Clean up button under System Restºre.
This will remove all but the most recent restore pºint.

For the benefit of the community reading this post, please rate the pºst.

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

I had Defender just not go through archives. The file was games.url in
several of the computer's account names in their favorites folder. I deleted
those as well and everything seems fine now. No more c2.lop annoying error.
Thanks!
