I'm having problems installing both tax software. I've tried both Turbotax
and Taxcut. With Turbotax, I get the error that setup.exe must shut down.
With Taxcut I get 0x7c80cf6d memory cannot be read. Any suggestions? I've
already tried disabling all start up items. I unistalled and reinstalled
..net framwork 2.0 numerous times.

Failure to install/run different products would indicate more of a
System/Hardware issue than just simple software incompatibility.
Also doing a remove/install on Dot net framework isn't going to
help. Since you've done so many Dot Net changes you might try
a Cleanup tool for Dot Net. Uninstall the Framework, run the
tool, reinstall Dot Net then install one of the tax packages and
try again.

Was a starting point. At this point the best advice might be to check
that the system is fully updated, both drivers and application updates.
Without knowing things like what applications are installed or what
your hardware platform is it's difficult to give you focused help.

I understand. That's some of what I've been trying to do. Not all updates
have been successful. For instance, I just tried to install the latest
version of Windows Installer. It downloaded to my desktop but when I try to
run it I get an error that says it is not a valid Win32 application

That's not a positive sign. I would start by going to:
Update.Microsoft.Com
follow the steps to use the latest version and begin your updating
there. You'll also want to use the latest Sun Java and possibly the
latest Adobe Shockwave & Flash players. Your problems could
also be related to what's installed on the computer. You wouldn't
by any chance be using ANYTHING McAfee or Norton ?

I'll try that.
No, I have had both in the past but now I'm running the free AVG. Even that
is having trouble running updates. I've reinstalled it a couple of times
over the last few days as well. I agree, things aren't looking good.

Good Luck with it - Symantec offers a removal tool that mostly gets
rid of remnants of their Norton product line. McAfee used to have a
Uninstaller/Cleanup tool but I haven't seen it on their site in a while.
You probably need a comprehensive system cleanup, but sometimes
that is very time consuming. There is always a rollover point where it's
easier to backup data ( Carefully ) and do a fresh install. I don't like
recommending that but after ____ hours twiddling around with a PC
it becomes the best solution.
