07 Slide Master problem.

I ran across an article with instructions on how to create recurring text on
every slide. I created a text box with some text on a random slide in the
master (not the title slide), but it only showed up on that slide when I left
the master and inserted a new slide into a presentation.
I tried again, placing a text box with text on the title slide in the master
this time, then closed the slide master. When i inserted a new slide, no
text box. I went back into the master and could see the text box on the
title master AND one other random master slide. This doesn't seem right and
wasn't how 03 worked, except for the Title slide, which worked differently.
What's going on? Do some of these slides react differently? I'm on XP.

I haven't done much with slide masters, but I think I know what your
problem is. When you go to the master view, you will see on the left a
master template at the top. Underneath that and slightly indented, you
will see several layouts. If you add something to one of those layouts,
it will only appear on the layout you add it to. For example, click on
the two-column text layout and add something. When you insert two-column
text slides, that thing will appear there but not on any other kinds of
slides. If you want something to appear on EVERY slide, click on the
template (the one on the very top) and it there.

Version 2007 works differently than 2003. In previous versions, layouts and
masters were separate; you create a slide master, and the layout you choose
is adapted from that master (whatever content you choose is fit into the
'content area'). Now, you are able to create your own layouts, and they are
not limited to one content area for all layouts.

As noted by David, make sure that any graphics appear on every layout you
are using (or add them to the 'Master' layout to appear on all layouts).

And, make sure that you don't have multiple slide masters (not layouts),
unless that is what you need; otherwise objects you place on one slide master
will not appear on the others. If you are working on a presentation created
in previous versions, it's probable that that presentation had multiple slide
masters. I usually delete all extra slide masters and layouts that are not in
use (including the pre-defined ones) to avoid confusion, and just create the
layouts that I need.

Thanks to everyone. All the same answer expalined in different ways, and all
very helpful. I do wish the MS tutorials, demos, etc could be as clear and
succinct. It shouldn't be so hard to find this basic and important
information. I appreciate all your answers.
