I have a firewall that is the dhcp server and i have laptops running wireless
network to access internet. My problem is that sometimes I'm am unable to
renew or get an Ip address. Configurations match other laptops. we are not
running a server/client network. and we have about 300 users but about 100
users at most at any point in time. is there a reason why i can't get ip
address for some laptops here? is there a max number of users allowed if
using a workgroup? do you have Microsoft documentation that shows your
answer? thanks

That isn't relevant to getting an IP address for Internet access (there's a
10-connection limit to an XP Pro or W2k Pro workstation, but if you aren't
using this network for file/print sharing without a server, it shouldn't be
a problem...)

What's your DHCP scope on the firewall? How many addresses does it allow?

i think that's more than enough. my issue is that some laptops just don't
get any ip address until about 3 to 4 hours later. most times, i don't get to
do any troubleshooting before it comes up.

Have you checked the DHCP log? Is the DHCP server limited in scope?

DHCP addresses are issued at a much lower level than workgroup membership.
Generally ability to connect, and scope of DHCP server (number of addresses
allowed to issue) would be relevant here.

Do you know that all laptops are associating with your access point, could there
be a nearby AP that some are trying to connect thru? Could it be a MAC address
filtering problem?

Have you examined the access point log?

Do you have any pattern of problems? Maybe by location? By laptop? By time of
day? Have you run any analysis of the wireless coverage area for signal
strength problems? There are so many possibilities with a large network - dead
spots (in your coverage area), live spots (outside the coverage area), intruders
using special equipment...

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Andi,

reduce the lease time to a few hours at most. If the DCHP server
issues week-long leases, you could be running out of IP
addresses.

Could be a network speed issue, if your switch is 100mb full and your Nic on
your laptop is set to 1000mb full or set to Auto it may have a timeout or
conflict in recieving an IP address because the negotiation times out.
