ZoneAlarm5 & Proboems with SP2

F

~ FreeSpirit ~

I took someone's advice on one of these MS NGS and removed ZoneAlarm 5 from
my PC/w WXP-homeSP2 and the IE problems ceased. I did have the XP firewall
disabled since I liked ZoneAlarm better. This seems to be a known problem
with WXP SP2 & ZoneAlarm5.

BTW, these are the anti-scumware programs we have on this PC. None of them
found anything - Some just innoculate against infestations.

Spybot
Adware
Norton AV & WinDr.
StartupInspector
SpywareBlaster
BHODeamon
CodeStuffStarter
HijackThis
CWShredder
ZoneAlarm <--- removed.

No one can say we're not "trying" to keep this PC secure.

Is there a question here? There is no conflict between ZA and SP2 if you're
using the latest version of ZA.

And Windows Firewall won't alert you if spyware or a virus is trying to
connect to the Internet.

================================
I was using the latest version of ZA. There were no problems until we
installed SP2. They started around that time. After removing ZA from my
system, the problems with IE6 immediately stopped. I do have an older copy
of ZA saved that I may install. No one else had the solution but that one
person..... If it wasn't ZA5 then what else could it have been?

Yes, that's why I wanted to keep ZA and not use the WXP version of a
firewall. However, what choice did I have? No IE6 and intermittent
problems with Usenet, *or* ZA. Any suggestions how to run ZA5 and XP-SP2
at the same time and still have access to the internet with IE6?

There was on my PC. Since uninstalling ZA5 the problems VANISHED! :)))
Please see this post from "another" MS newsgroup regarding ZA5 and I.E.
Should I remove the keys it left in the registry BEFORE reinstalling perhaps
a different version of ZA?

Are you using Zone Alarm 5.5? IF so, it has a nasty habit of shutting
down the internet connection. At present there is no fix or what to shut
function off.

I was hesitant to install ZA 5.0, given all the reported problems. I
finally waited for things to settle down, and tried ZA 5.5. (Of course, I
did a full backup of the C: parition before installing, just in case I had
problem.) ZA 5.5 works well on my PC with XP SP-2.

I use two programs to backup whole paritions, Norton GHOST (version 2002)
and Acronis True Image (version 8, build 774). Both copy nearly everything
on the partition to another place. The only files excluded are those that
windows will automatically re-create, such as the pagefile and the hiberfil.

For GHOST, my preferred other place is a second internal hard drive. For
True Image it is an external USB hard drive. Note that newer versions of
GHOST can also write directly to external disks.

If a recovery is required, GHOST is booted from a floppy, or a floppy image
transferred to a bootable CD (via Easy CD or Nero). True Image is booted
from a CD that it makes for you. True Image can also be booted form a set
of floppies, but a CD is really the better way to go.

Bob - Ghost 2003 was an enormous improvement over Ghost 2002, and the
current version - Ghost 9.0 - is a nice improvement over Ghost 2003. You
should give it a try, particularly since 'Norton' brand software is heavily
discounted and rebated. I paid 3 bucks and change for Ghost 9.0. And when
you buy Ghost 9.0, Symantec throws in Ghost 2003 at no extra charge.

==================
I guess I start by making a bootable CD using Nero. I have Nero but no
Ghost Programs. I assume the bootable CD is used when XP can't boot by
itself... once booted I also assume there would be some kind of directions
to follow??!?!?!! Or is this done for you local tech?
