Here's what I have
cable modem connected directly to router: d-link DI-514 wireless router DHCP enabled (192.168.34.1
PC1 - Win98 SE cabled to router IP assigned by router (192.168.34.100
PC2 - WinXPh wireless to router IP assigned by router (192.168.34.101
USB printer connected to PC1 and share

subnet is 255.255.255.
gateway 192.168.34.

I can ping the router and the other PC from both PCs. The PCs are in the same workgroup MSHOME. I can see the shared files on PC2 from PC1. I can see PC1 listed in the workroup on PC2, but I cannot see the shared folders or the shared printer. I am using only TCP/IP with Netbios enabled, File and Printer Sharing, Client for Microsoft Networks. Software Firewalls turned off, ICF and ICS turned off in XP. I have updated the NIC drivers to the latest version. I have file/print sharing enabled on both machines..
I tried adding 192.168.34.0 as trusted IP Range in ZoneAlarm on PC1 and nothing so I turn off ZoneAlarm on PC1 and still nothing. PC1 can see PC2 with all firewalls running. I need PC2 to see PC1 but most importantly print

Please help.

Try running the home networking wizard on both machines,
telling it that you are on a hub.. ignore the Microsoft
warning that this is not safe..

if the printer on win 98 box is shared, you should be able
to see it when adding printer in xp..

there maybe an issue with xp trying to grab the drivers
from the 98 machine

Make sure that TCP/IP is the only net.protocol installed on the W9x PC.
I kinda think that if NetBEUI or IPX/SPX is also installed, it is
possible for F&P sharing to become bound to one of those instead of to
TCP/IP; then, a TCP/IP-only PC (the norm for XP HE) might not be able
to find the shared Fs & Ps.

thank you Bob. TCP/IP is the only protocol on the 9x machine.

Win 9x must have NetBIOS to work on a network, so on the XP system, in
Networking, Properties, in the TCP/IP selection, Properties, Advanced,
WinS, at the bottom, make sure you have it checked for "Use NetBIOS over
TCP/IP".

I was having the same problems until last night. I checked that and now
both systems talk freely to each other and both have clear access to the
internet through the router/switch.
