XP Winsock fix

J

J Lunis

Have a Netgear NAS that my PC can no longer 'find.'
Netgear support tried a number of tweaks and finally claim I need to
repair Winsock. I was directed to google and enter 'xp winsock fix.'
Did that. Here are my questions.
This repair seems quite dangerous.
backup critical files
copy network settings
backup registry
For this procedure, which files are considered 'critical?'
If this fix makes my PC unbootable, then what?
Any way to check winsock integrity before I begin this adventure?

Where did find these instructions?, and what the Error message or you mean
you can't access the Router?.
If you can't access the Router try this:
Press the Reset Button on the back of the Router with a pin for 30 Sces and
Power down the Router then the Computer and leave for about a minute then try
to power in this sequence:
Power the Router then the PC and try to access the Router Web page and
reconfigure your setting by running the wizard.
You can repair the winsock by running this command:
Open a run command and type in:
netsh winsock reset click [OK]

Reboot your machine and see if you will access or connect to the router.
or automatically by downloading the winsock Fixer from here if the above
didn't work:

the LAN cables.

No, no, - I can access the router.
I have a Netgear NAS device plugged in to the router. All devices
attached (cable or wireless) work well except the NAS.
Using the cmd prompt and netgear sw, I can find the device and the IP
address.
I can successfully ping the device.
HOWEVER, the device does not appear in Explorer as a drive.
Netgear support claims it is a bad winsock and, if repaired, my NAS will
then show up in Explorer.

Thanks again. went to both sites and read the info. Subnets match.
NAS document is as follows - 'The SC101/SC101T is practically
maintenance-free. It uses a SAN File System (SFS).'
You wrote - 'try the configuration on the NAS

understand this.
BTW, the NAS worked very well for a few months then disappeared
overnight. So it did work once. This is one reason the Netgear rep
says it is a winsock error.

Hi Lunis,
This issue doesn't have any relation to the winsock if you are able to
access the Router from that computer and browser the Internet.
If you have a cheap NAS I will think it may be gone bad or need
reconfiguration, read the Documentation came with it to reconfigure it by
unattached it and reattach it to the Network or to the router whichever
settings you used to share this NAS.
Best if you tell us what make and version this NAS may we can give you a
precise
Solution if any, also what Anti-Virus and Firewall you used.

One thing I find interesting. Netgear has an app that runs inside the
CMD prompt. This app can find the NAS - the IP address, the size of the
drive, the number of partitions. I can successfully ping the IP
address. It shows up in Device Manager as a SCSI device. But Windows
Explorer can't 'see' the drive. No way to read or write to it.
Nonetheless, Netgear support says the problem is a bad WInsock and I
need to do a Fix.

Hi Lunis,
This is a problem. It takes some configuration of the routers to put them
both on the same network subnet and turn off one of the DHCP servers, then
try to allow UDP data (Protocol) through port 20001 before the PC can see
the SC101
After you attach the power cable and run an Ethernet cable to your router,
you'll need to install the Storage Central Management Utility software from
the included CD came with it, on each computer that will have access to the
NAS SC101
Read here:
http://www.netgear.co.uk/pdfs/SC101_DS.pdf
http://www.netgear.co.uk/digital_home_sc101.php
Do you have one HDD or two installed on this NAS, and what changed to make
the NAS doesn't appear in the Explorer, did you update the Router Firmware
recently?.

Explorer can't 'see' the drive. No way to read or write to it.
Nonetheless, Netgear support says the problem is a bad WInsock and I
need to do a Fix.

Hi Lunis,
This is a problem. It takes some configuration of the routers to put them
both on the same network subnet and turn off one of the DHCP servers, then
try to allow UDP data (Protocol) through port 20001 before the PC can see
the SC101
After you attach the power cable and run an Ethernet cable to your router,
you'll need to install the Storage Central Management Utility software from
the included CD came with it, on each computer that will have access to the
NAS SC101
Read here:

Do you have one HDD or two installed on this NAS, and what changed to make
the NAS doesn't appear in the Explorer, did you update the Router Firmware
recently?.

routers? them? My setup is one router with ethernet connection to my
PC and the SC101. My laptop connects wirelessly (and it can't see the
SC101 either).
In McAfee, if I understand this correctly, I can not open/close specific
ports - only allow/deny specific programs. I have, BTW, disabled McAfee
protection and, still, the PC couldn't find the SC101.

I have installed/reinstalled SC101 SCM 4 times - I am not certain now if
I did it in the order you have here. Much as I hate to, I may try it again.
One HDD in the SC101. Uncertain when this happened - a few months ago.
I infrequently use it so I could have made more than one change. I
have updated fw a few times since I 'lost' the SC101.
One unrealistic hope - any way to test/repair winsock without the major
concern of loosing info or 'bootability?'

repair Winsock.

Make sure that all cables connected in the right way, meaning the WAN and
the LAN cables.

Okay, try this:
Make sure the NAS and the router on the same subnet (i.e if the router IP
address 192.168.0.1 the NAS should be something 192.168.168.0.x.
What Format is the NAS is it a NTFS or FAT, try the configuration on the NAS
and see if that will make the computer see your Drive and also read the
documentation came with your NAD Storage drive.

Thanks again. went to both sites and read the info. Subnets match.
NAS document is as follows - 'The SC101/SC101T is practically
maintenance-free. It uses a SAN File System (SFS).'
You wrote - 'try the configuration on the NAS
and see if that will make the computer see your Drive' - I don't
understand this.

Hi Lunis,
Will try to repair the winsock and see, which I can't see is a winsock but
there is some possibilities.
If you have a Management Utility to configure this NAS try it as described
in the NAS documentation.
Try to run this command before the winsock repair:
sfc /scannow click [OK]
You can try the winsock command:
netsh winsock reset then Reboot your machine and see if the Drive will be
listed in the Explorer.
HTH.
Good luck.

Well, nass, my luck ran out
tried sfc /scannow - waited about 15 minutes for it to complete, then it
disappeared. I guess that is good.
ran netsh winsock reset
received "Warning: could not obtain host information from machine.
Class not registered"
followed by 'reset was successful.'
Rebooted.
Now the Netgear utility can't find the SC101.
McAfee says I have NO network.
Local Area Connection shows the network is connected and I can surf the
net but the SC101 is gone as is (according to McAfee) my laptop.
