XP Startup.wav,will not play correctly.

Why does it matter? I hear you asking but does anyone know
if a workround has been found for the problem of broken,
crackling, playback of the the XP Startup.wav. Sound works
perfectly throughout my pc otherwise, I`ve changed the
actual Startup.wav for one of my own but still the
playback is broken. Short of changing the file to one
named silence.wav I can think of nothing much else to do.
I know I really ought to get a life but this is soooo
bugging me.
Many thanks, Charlie UK.

First thing to check is Windows Volume Control, if it is set too high, it
will cause exactly the kind of issue you report. Open Control Panel, open
Sounds and Audio devices, click the Advanced button under Device Volume, if
the Volume slider under play control is past the middle, move it down to the
middle and see if the issue clears up. If yes, that's the problem. You can
then test to see how high you can push the slider before the problem
appears.

If that's not the issue, you may need to move some cards around inside your
system as something in a slot adjacent to the soundcard may be conflicting
with the card. Even though it may not be causing an issue anywhere else,
that is the most likely cause after the volume slider.
