xp setting problem--recorder playback and folder viewing

Ok, I have two problems, which I'm told are both due to my windows (XP
home) settings.
First:
I am transfering cassette-tape interviews to audio files. I plug my
cassette player into my microphone jack, hit play and record, and it
records fine. The problem, is that I can't hear the cassete playback
while it's recording, so I can't stop and begin a new file when I have
multiple interviews on the same cassette. I'm told I'm supposed to have
a microphone option on the playback settings in my volume controls.
Well, I don't. It's under the record settings, but not playback. I
don't know how to fix that, and no one I've called does either.
Problem two:
Probably wouldn't bother me if I hadn't just been told it was related to
problem one. I like the filmstrip viewing option for my files with
images (usually jpegs). Unfortunately, that option randomly isn't
available on some of my photograph folders. How do I put it on there?

I've been told by IAT people at my university that these are both due to
some problem with my Windows. But they can't tell me what. I do have
the XP install disc, but I don't want to completely screw up my system
by trying to re-install Windows. Any ideas?

Problem 1:

Open the volume control, select 'Options' -> 'Properties'. In the properties dialog, select
'Playback' then, in the 'Show the following...' list, make sure the checkbox for Microphone is
checked.

Side note:

I'm surprised you're not getting distortion using the Mic input, better to use 'Line In'

Problem 2:

Before a folder will show the 'Filmstrip' Option, it needs to be customized as a 'Pictures' or
'Photo Album' folder. See the 'Customize' tab in the folder's 'Properties' dialog.

You may be better plugging into the Line-in jack - mic is usually too
sensitive for the phones output of a player.

A tool I suggest for doing this kind of job is CD Wave (www.cdwave.com )
- shareware, $15 to register

I figured I should clarify my problem (and if I posted it in again, I
might have better luck finding a response among the HUGE number of
posts!).

I do not have a line-in jack, so the mic in is my only option (the
quality has been fine for my purposes). [I'm using a laptop, if that
matters.] The volume settings for the mic only appear in the recorder
section of the volume controls; mic is not a listed option in the
playback section. This last seems to be the source of my problem--I
need to find out how to make the mic appear in both the recorder AND
playback sections of volume control. THANX!
