Recording and playback

I need to record using a microphone. When I plug in the
microphone the sound plays through my speakers. I don't
want the sound to play through the speakers while I'm
recording. How do I fix this?

Mute the speakers, or turn the volume down all the way.

The solution was to simply mute the microphone on the
playback volume control. I originally thought that if I
muted the microphone it wouldn't pick up anything. Now I
know.

Double click on the vol control icon in the task bar to get the mixer.
In that take Options - Properties, and select Playback controls.
You can then in those Check to 'Mute' the microphone, without affecting
the setting to Select it if you take the Recording controls
