sound recorder quality

I'm trying to use sound recorder with a microphone to record live music such
as a piano. The playback is filled with static so the result is no good.
I've tried several microphones with the same result. My idea is to record to
the computer and then burn a CD, but right now I'm stuck. I have XP and have
already extended the length of time sound recorder will go.

Any ideas where the problem might lie?

XP's Sound Recorder is limited to 60 seconds which will be of little use
for what you are trying to do. Use Audacity. Download and run free copy.
