XP starts with incoming phonecall

New computer, running XP Pro. Last night, I did a complete shut down. Not
hibernate, not standby, but shut down. This morning, when a call came in on
my fax line, the machine started up and got as far as the logon box. During
the day, I use Winfax, but that program was absolutely NOT running when I
shut down yesterday, and when I shut down Winfax, I made sure to disable
auto receive. How do I prevent the machine from starting this way, other
than disconnecting the phone line?

This is a feature that is controlled in the BIOS. It's called Wake on
Demand or something like it. Go into the BIOS and you should find options
to control what is allowed to Wakeup (start) your computer. You should
also be able to turn it off completely.

There should be a setting in your modem settings I believe that says
"Wake on Ring" you'll need to disable that.

Look in your system tasks.

Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks

Good luck!

Scheduled tasks run when the computer's actually off? Not standby, not
hibernating, but OFF.

That's what I figured (about the tasks). Talahasee is 0 for 2 today, in
terms of suggestions.

Par for the player. His intentions are good, not his advice.
