XP SP2

Jim

I have read in a few news articles today that if you have
Automatic Updates set to download and install updates,
when XP SP2 is released it will download it and install
it. In the past service packs were not downloaded by
Automatic Update, just critical security updates. I don't
want SP2 to be downloaded automatically. SP2 is supposed
to be released in August. Does anyone know for a fact
that Automatic Update will download it? Thanks for any
help.

Since SP2 is considered a "Critical" update, I would assume that
Automatic Updates will apply it automatically.
However, I'm speculating here - I think SP2 will only be triggered
through Windows Update Version 5, not the current Version 4.0.

There will be components to Version 5 that must be installed first.
V5 needs a new Update class module to be installed on your PC.

Microsoft will probably clarify this as time gets closer for the SP
to be released. For now I would just leave my setup as is, surely
there will be information posted before the actual code is released.

From what I have read, SP2 will be so large it probibly
won't be avail. on dialup. It will be released in cd
form.

I would suggest putting Auto Updates onto 'Advise me' at least for the
moment.

His question was whether or not it will come in by way of autoupdate. While
there's been no announcement, the autoupdate feature usually only sends
critical updates. SP1 didn't come in by way of autoupdate, users had to go
to Windows update or the Microsoft download site in order to download SP1
and I would think the same would apply to SP2.

I was answering the poster who said SP2 won't be available via dialup
but just on CD. That is almost certainly not going to be the case!

That's correct and I'm sorry if I misunderstood.

It will almost certainly be availabe to download - and the server you
download it from has not idea if you are on dialup, broadband, or
standing right there at the server it is stored on.

The true question is if you have the patience to download this beast
on dialup. Of course, if you don't want to wait to "purchase" this SP
on CD, then you can download it for "free."

It basically depends on how patient you are.
