XP install and SP2

Hello,

This may be a dumb question, but I haven't been able to find a clear answer.
I'm building a new PC and I've installed Win XP (original, no service
packs). I'm trying to follow along in the motherboard manual - it says to
install all Windows updates and service packs before installing chipset
drivers, etc...For some reason, and I think this is a common problem with my
particular motherboard, my onboard ethernet ports are not working, so I
cannot install any updates. I have, however, downloaded SP2 and installed it
just to see what happens. After hours of screwing around with drivers and
installing a PCI NIC card (which didn't work), the ethernet ports magically
began working. Anyway, I guess my question is, does SP2 include all prior
updates that get downloaded with Automatic Updates? I know it includes
everything from SP1...Just wondering if I somehow need to get my ethernet
ports working before installing SP2 in order to install updates first (if
they're not included in SP2).

Thanks!!

Personally I've allways used the motherboard cd to install drivers prior to
updating win. If your mobo contains an onboard nic, then likely it wont work
untill you've installed chipset & other mobo drivers
sp2 includes all updates prior to sp2
You *dont* obtain drivers from winupdate but use the manufacturers drivers
avilable from their cd or sites

I thought you said your ethernet ports "magically began working" and
you downloaded/installed SP2.

SP2 includes everything you need. You do not need SP1 first or any of the
updates release prior to SP2.

And as soon as you have SP2 installed, see this KB article which should help
make Automatic Update functional:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP:

Since you are install XP onto a new "system", you should consider
downloading the SP 2 completely and slipstreaming it with the orginial
CD. This creates a new install CD which will have all the updates in
SP2 pre-installed. Then just install the chipset drivers and then do
the remaining updates.

SP2 includes everything you need. You do not need SP1 first or any
of the updates release prior to SP2.

Not quite; you still need the hot fixes that came out AFTER SP2 was
released.

SP2 includes SP1 and all the hotfixes between SP1 and SP2. You still
need to get the updates that occurred after the release of SP2 though.
And there are quite a few of them.

You're fine. Just get the nic working so you can get the 100+ updates
to SP2 later.

Hi Pa Bear,

I'm not doubting you when you say "NB: Also applies to clean installs,
upgrade installs, and Recovery installs."

But I'm wondering why there would be ANY leftover files to cause conflicts
from a prior installation, if a user does a clean install and is basically
starting an XP installation on a newly-formatted hard drive.

PA Bear,

Does this mean that if I ever want to do a clean install on one of my older
XP machines that shipped with the XP Gold CD -- and I didn't slipstream SP2
into it -- that I'll have to first install just XP Gold and then have to use
either of the two methods described in KB943144, before I'm able to install
SP2?

Or am I not correctly understanding?

Normally, you can download the complete SP2 install files and place
them on a CD.

No, you do not have to follow the KB article. You are suggest to:

1) Start the XP firewall
2) Install an anti-virus system
3) Install SP2

and then follow the KB article. (The sequence can be changed for
steps 2 and 3.)

Also, once you have finished the SP2 install, do a Windows Update.

NOTE: Ignore SP3 for now! It is still in test phases and not
released as a general update to the public.

No. In such a case, you'd need to repeat the same steps I gave you in an
earlier reply to this thread: (1) Download/install SP2 manually, (2) do
either method in KB943144* in order to be able to use Windows/Automatic
Update(s) to (3) install all other post-SP2 updates including SP3 (after
it's been released).

*Note that about 2 years after the release of SP3, support for SP2 will end.
Assuming no big changes in the updating mechanism, you'll probably need to
(1) install SP3 right of the bat and then (2) jump through either the same
hoops in KB943144 or a later KB article that replaces it, in order to be
able to use Windows/Automatic Updates to (3) install all post-SP3 updates.
