Automatic Update struggling?

My PC is a desktop machine running XP Home SP2, DSL connection.
Automatic Updates (AU) is turned on, set to install at a particular time.

On Tuesday afternoon, Microsoft released several security patches
rated as critical. Since then, I've rebooted my computer several times, and
at least twice, the Automatic Updates yellow exclamation point has appeared
in my systray, but only for about 15 seconds, then it goes away. Its like
AU is trying to download the updates, but is being blocked or stopped. Any
ideas about this? I just checked Microsoft Updates, and those patches are
still there, ready to be downloaded/installed. I've never been too
impressed with the promptness of Automatic Updates, to be candid.

I have a computer with AU configured and it asked me yesterday if I
wanted to download and install the updates. I clicked Yes and it still
hasn't downloaded anything.

Don't use additional code, Windows/Microsoft/Automatic Updates, that
gives the OS patching process more ways to fail.
