Xp sp2 Installation crisis

G

Guest

I have just installed SP2 to an HP xe4100 laptop and it failed to restart,
message,missing files \windows\inf\biosinfo.inf
I now find it is a known problem with a possible fix at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885626
how can I find (4) the number of the sp2 download and the (5) administrator
name
or alternatively how can I restart in SAFE MODE to go to last saved.
Any ideas please

Has the install ever booted properly? During startup, right after you see
the BIOS splash-screen, press F8. This opens the boot options. You'll see
Safe Mode there.

Thanks Jason, yes I can now access SAFE MODE but it will not start from
there: missing files (same message)
I have now gone to Recovery with the XP CD and I am at the command prompt
which is C:\windows
What now please???????????

You may or may not see multiple choices at the Recovery Console, enter "1"
if there is only one choice.

Otherwise:
1. How to use the Automatic Recovery feature to recover your computer if
the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup program is not completed successfully:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=875355

2. Reboot tapping F8 each second.
Select "Last known good configuration" at the menu.
If that fails, reboot tapping F8 again this time choosing Safe Mode.
Then System Restore to Date/Time before issue started:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore

3. Otherwise perform a Repair Installation:

4. When you are ready for SP-2, follow the Service Pack Installation
Checklist:

Thanks Jupiter,
Ive tried Safe Mode, No Go, same message "cannot start files missing etc.
Ive tried MS uninstall, got some action, looked like it was
processing\loading files but when I attempted to restart same deal,
The other article applies to a fresh install recovery, any other ideas
please or is it a complete new install.
regards, Bob.
