Problem:
Ext USB hard drive (contains archived files) has been used well with
old XP computer for past 2 yrs now. In the course of (i) transfering
to a new computer with SP2 and (ii) updating old computer with XP SP2,
the ext USB hard Drive no longer works with either computer.
Symptoms:
MS XP "Disk Management" -- I can "see" the hard drive as "DISK 1".
BUT it describes the HD as "Unallocated" and Windows Explorer doesn't
assign a drive letter so I can't get to the files on it.
MS XP "Device Manager" -- under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" it
has "USB Mass Storage Device" installed and its properties show it as
"functioning properly". Under "Disk Drive" it has the specific hard
drive (IBM DJSA-210) installed and it too says "functioning properly".
History:
In the course of transfering files from my old computer to my new
computer, I copied all my personal documents onto the ext hard drive.
At one point, the old computer rebooted with the ext hard drive
plugged it -- This was the first time this happened after the old
computer was upgraded with XP SP2.
During the reboot, a blue screen appears with XP windows in the upper
left hand corner and it said something like "disk partition
error...windows XP fixing".
After XP SP2 'fixed' the ext hard drive, I have had the problem &
symptom described above when using it with both the old and new
computer.
I Really need to recover the files. Is there an "undelete"
application that can "look" at the ext hard drive without Explorer
assigning it a drive letter?
Thank You,
Steve
